I would be interested in the following training opportunities when they offered:
The World As It Is & The World As It Should Be (1.5 hours) - One of the most important aspects of community organizing is hope. Without hope and a vision of what the world could be, there is little direction for where we should go. Join us for a session focused on both naming The World As It Is as well as imagining our way into the World That Should Be. During this session you will reignite your imagination and begin to understand the importance of relationships.
Introduction to Community Organizing (1.5 hours) - (This session is ideally for participants who have attended The World As It Is session.) Are you new to the concept of community organizing that brings those closest to the issues into the center of creating change? Or maybe you’ve been away from it for awhile? It could be that you’re curious to better understand how MCAN does what we do. Join us for an introduction to our organizing model. Understand the different stages of organizing through story sharing of the organizing that has happened as well as the organizing that is being moved today.
Introduction to Power (2 hours) - The world as it is doesn’t exist by mistake. Instead, we spend everyday living in the imagination of other people. Join us for a session focused on digging in around the source of that imagination, why it was possible for it to be made a reality, and discover how that world is impacting you. Leave the space with examples of how others have come together to push back.
Putting the Human Back in Human Resources (2 hours) - MCAN as a social justice organization centers its work on the voices, lives, and leadership of those most impacted by social injustice. This training is one of the many ways we are aligning our values with our practice of dismantling a corporate mindset rooted in capitalism and competition and, in turn, embracing a collaborative spirit in the workplace. This training will explore the role of HR through MCAN’s restorative lens, one that is more relational, equitable, and reparative. It will engage participants in an exercise to build an understanding of how to balance laws and policies with grace, transparency, and integrity.
Designing For Change: Planning An Event With Impact (2 hours) - An event can come and go, but the impact of what happens there can last a lifetime. This training will help you achieve your event’s desired purpose by centering your attendees’ experience. You’ll learn how to create an atmosphere that is comfortable and enjoyable by taking into account cultural awareness, learning styles, accessibility issues and the many barriers that might prevent someone from showing up fully, authentically, and powerfully. You will also build skills to encourage your guests to think outside of the box and explore their artistic skills in a way that feels liberating. Before long, you’ll be creating events that help those you gather to feel at home with themselves and in the world around them.
Every Person Matters: Data That Supports Liberation (2 hours) - For too long, data has been used by those in power to justify violence and prejudice. This training reintroduces data as a tool towards liberation and humanization. Instead of looking at people as statistics, you will explore how to center people and find humanity in the numbers. We will unpack the whys and hows of meaningful, goal-oriented data collection and explore the power of data in community organizing.
Art of Action: Curating Curious Spaces for Creative Change (2 hours) - Whether documenting the movement through time or presenting the world as it could be, visual art often speaks louder than words. It can draw viewers in and disrupt a status quo. This training will explore historic and contemporary examples of creative arts which have nurtured shifts in perspectives, mobilized movements and fostered cultural, narrative, and systemic change. Participants will spend time during the training creating their own art of action to drive their engagement going forward.
Do you have any experiences, expertise, or networks, you would be interested in sharing with the MCAN Network?
